For those w/ Diabetes & Weight issues

July 12th, 2007

I recently had an experience while eating out with my family. As a nutrition educator I had taken for granted that when aeating_out.jpg nutritionist recommends that one eats 1/2 of the portion served - that indeed that is what they do. My cousin then instructed me on exactly how this recommendation is carried out. To eat 1/2 of the meal served one would push half the portion to one side of the plate and then enjoy the other side of the plate. Great - Not bad, not exactly how I would do it - but it should work - right - wrong.

What then happens is while one is waiting for the bill or for something to wrap the other half in the other half becomes smaller. As my cousin put it, “I often pick on the other half during the post meal conversation, until it is wrapped and off my plate”.

This must be why my family found it revolutionary when I suggested that the half that one was not going to eat be taken off the plate before the first fork goes into your meal. This prevents that “picking” syndrome and allows one to stay on their meal plan and not fall victim to “I shouldn’t have had all that”.

For those trying to stay on a meal plan it is often hard to put the fork down. Why make it harder. Take away the portion that you do not want to eat before you start your meal. Safe guard your health by being proactive.

Now go on, enjoy the company when you eat out. Knowing that you are in the “Safe Zone” with your food by taking away what you don’t want to eat before your start your meal.
